All readers out there have a cherished novel, the one that has become their only friend during tough times. Personally, a great novel is one that I have re-read, oftentimes more than once. It’s a book where I can recall the names of characters and specific parts. It’s a book that when people ask me to recommend a great book, I immediately think of it. Here’s a list of my favorite novels —

1 Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

This unforgettable novel deserves all the love in the world. So enigmatic, and beautifully written by author Ransom Riggs. It tells the tale of a teenage boy, Jacob Portman, who discovers he is peculiar and goes on to travel the island of Wales to stumble upon his entire ancient peculiar family. It has the newest concept of a horror-fantasy story. It has two hair-raising sequels as well- Hollow City and Library Of Souls. This is one of those books that I have to read every night before bed, even if it is a few pages. I’ve read it innumerable times and it will always hold the number one spot in my heart.

2 The Silent Patient

This engrossing bestseller is the perfect psychological thriller. Penned by author Alex Michaelides, it had numerous twists that played tricks on my mind. It portrays the flawless murder by the protagonist Theo Faber, who later on becomes the doctor who solves his own crime mystery. The writing was so captivating that I just couldn’t keep it down. I completed this book in two days, that should tell you something!

3 Boy Nobody

I stumbled upon this book when it was given to me as a gift. And boy I must say, this is one of the best gifts I’ve received. It is the story of a brainwashed teen assassin who wakes up to find himself torn between his mission and a girl whose father he is targeting. This is a brilliant thought-provoking thriller with quite relatable writing. The sequel I Am The Mission, is a continuation of the puzzling first edition. I had developed a love-hate relationship with the characters because all of them have such confusing, yet seizing personalities. A must-have.

4 A Wrinkle In Time

Written for young adults, this novel was a much-needed escape from reality and fall into the wonders of time travel. Its about a young, awkward teenage girl, Meg Murry, who loses her father to space. She departs on a journey to different dimensions to rescue him. Contrary to this novel’s simple writing style, its story is quite gripping. Honestly, this book felt like a home I’ve never been to, but I still, feel every part of it.

5 The Diary Of A Young Girl, Anne Frank

Words can’t do this novel any justice. This is a journal by Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager who chronicled her family’s two years in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. It tells the history of her life and how she felt to be a young girl among the many adults that she lived with in hiding. The way she tells her tale, makes my heart ache. I cannot imagine the hardships she had to endure during those times and how she must have overcome them. Her diary is not to be read, but to be felt.
